Happy Saturday!
Today is the last day of Waste Week.
Today's challenge is:
Start a compost bin
Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste currently make up 20 to 30 percent our garbage. Making a compost pile keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane.
All composting requires three basic ingredients:
- Browns - This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs.
- Greens - This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds.
Another composting option is vermicomposting.
What is vermicomposting?
Vermicompost is similar to plain compost, except that it uses worms in addition to microbes and bacteria to turn organic waste into a nutrient-rich fertilizer. Vermicompost, or vermiculture, most often uses Red Wiggler worms.
